Body Image
We all have worries about our body image, especially as we get older and our bodies start to change.
You will notice your body starting to change during Puberty.
Boys will grow taller, their voice may break and get deeper. They’ll start to grow facial hair and thicker body hair under their arms and around their penis.
Girls will grow taller, their hips will widen and breasts start to develop.
Because of hormones changing in both boys and girls, skin and hair often feel oilier and sometimes causes spots.
Puberty can be a worrying time for boys and girls because of all the changes to your body. You may notice your friends developing faster or slower than you are, but try not to worry. It’s different for everyone, and there is no right time when this should happen to you.
Through the media- television, magazines, websites etc- we are constantly surrounded by images of women with perfect hair, skin and bodies. Many young people feel under a great deal of pressure to look the same way.
There is nothing wrong with trying to look good, but remember to be realistic. Lots of the men and women you see in the media spend hours having their hair and make-up done, have a personal trainer and get their photographs air-brushed to make them look better.
Trying to look perfect is impossible and can sometimes be harmful to your health. Some young people go on unhealthy diets or starve themselves to lose weight.
So don’t compare yourself to celebrities, models or even your friends. Everyone’s body is different.
It is also helpful to remember that other young people your age are going through the same worries about their own bodies.
