Menopause
What is Menopause?
Menopause really means the last period. It happens to all women usually around age 51-52 for the majority of women. However it may occur earlier than this for a small number of women and if this is before age 45 it is generally referred to as early menopause. Many women refer to menopause as the ‘change of life’
What causes menopause?
It is the result of the ovaries failing to produce oestrogen and progesterone which regulates menstruation. At this point egg production (ovulation) will cease.
Periods do not usually stop suddenly, although this can happen for some women. Generally the periods become less frequent and some periods may appear to be missed. Some women may also experience heavier bleeding during this time.
Once the periods have naturally stopped for one year then the woman can be said to be menopausal.
Other menopausal symptoms:
- Hot flushes
- Night sweats
- Palpitations
- Insomnia
- Joint aches
- Headaches
Menopausal symptoms are thought to be due to the changing hormone levels, in particular falling oestrogen levels. These symptoms can affect around 70% of women. There are many factors which can influence symptoms such as lifestyle, diet, exercise and medication. Changing some of your lifestyle factors eg stopping smoking, diet can have a positive effect on menopausal symptoms.
