  • It is not a sexually transmitted infection
  • It is an imbalance of the normal bacteria that live in the vagina.

How do I know I’ve got it?

  • You may have more discharge than normal
  • The discharge may have a fishy smell a smelly thin whitish discharge

  • Your GP
  • GUM clinic
  • Family Planning clinic

What is the treatment?

Antibiotics will get rid of the infection.

What if I don’t get treated?

  • Bacterial vaginosis often gets better by itself so treatment is not necessary in all cases.
  • Tell your doctor if you are pregnant as this may affect how they treat your BV.

How do I avoid getting bacterial vaginosis again?

  • Avoid using vaginal deoderants
  • Avoid bubble baths and oils
  • Use water to clean your vagina and vulva
  • Wipe from front to back (towards your bottom) after going to the toilet
